How to choose the Makeup Artist and Hairstylist for your wedding day

wedding makeup, bridal makeup artist, bridal hairstylist, Washington DC wedding vendors

It is currently engagement season, and if you recently got engaged, then, first of all, Congratulations! It’s a fascinating part of life, but it can be truly overwhelming to find your wedding vendors for your big day.

As a bridal Makeup Artist, I am always super excited to connect with a bride-to-be. On the wedding day, the beauty team is the first vendor to show up, and start the day getting ready. Choosing a compatible makeup and hair stylist is a must-have in order to set a good tone and stress-free morning for your wedding day. Besides, you will be looking at those wedding photos for years, and you want to make sure your makeup and hair are on point in all the photos and that you are the best version of yourself. That’s why I created this guide for you to help to choose your dream makeup and hair professional for your special day.

Tip #1 – Look at their portfolio

This first tip should be a must-have. Every artist has a unique talent and you want to make sure that the person you book creates a makeup style/hairstyle that you like. Nowadays, it’s very easy to search on social media and see the artist’s work. Although we always customize each client’s makeup look/hairstyle if you have a specific request, for example, you prefer a dewy skin, or bronzy eye look make sure you find very similar styles on their portfolio.

Tip #2 – Check their reviews

Reviews are a great way to read and see what other brides experienced working with that artist. If you tend to get nervous and you know what will happen to you on the wedding day, just make sure you choose an artist who makes the bride calm and relaxed during the makeup application/ hairstyling process. Again, these couple of hours at the beginning of the day will set the tone for the rest of the day.

…”She was also just fun to be around and had a calming presence”..
-Shellie, our 2022 April bride.

Tip #3 – Make sure to have a contract

When it comes to working with vendors, and it’s not only beauty you need to make sure you have a contract with them. The contract is the insurance to make sure the vendors will show up on the wedding day. Make sure to read through carefully and that you are aware of all the additional fees and conditions added to the contract to avoid any confusion later on.

Tip #4 – Have a reasonable budget when it comes to your MUA or Hairstylist.

I won’t be talking about how you budget your wedding, but I would highlight one thing: If you find your dream MUA/Hairstylist and they are available on your date, don’t miss out on them. Your wedding is once in a lifetime event, and you want to feel and look the best version of yourself. You will be the star of the day, make sure you feel the same way. Having the best makeup and hairstyle will definitely give you more confidence and not to talk about all the compliments you will be getting that day. 🙂
DON’T let your bridal party set your budget when it comes to a makeup artist/hairstylist.

Tip #5- Travel/distance

Make sure that if you find an artist you really like, they will travel to your getting-ready location. Usually, they have a targeted area where they mostly work and travel, but if you are planning a destination wedding, you can simply write an email/submit their inquiry form and ask them.
DON’T book an artist/stylist just because they are the closest to that venue. That doesn’t mean they are the best fit for you and your bridal party as well.

I hope these tips are helpful and you will find your dream beauty team for your Big Day. If you have any other questions please reach out to us via email: ivettbmua@gmail.com
